Prostate Cancer Treatments

Radical prostatectomy is surgical removal of the prostate.  The surgery is usually performed using the da Vinci robot, though certain patients may require an open surgical procedure.

External beam radiation is  another form of active treatment for prostate cancer. IMRT, Cyberknife and proton therapy are different forms. Brachytherapy of the prostate is a minimally invasive form of radiation treatment that is used for prostate cancer. Tiny, radioactive capsules or seeds are implanted into the prostate gland. The seeds give off radiation that kills the tumor. It is an outpatient procedure done in the hospital or surgery center and performed under local or general anesthesia.

Cryosurgery of the prostate is a minimally invasive treatment that is used for prostate cancer. Cryosurgery rapidly freezes and thaws the cancerous tissue. It is an outpatient procedure done in the hospital or surgery center and performed under general anesthesia.
